Sustainability: Another area where red and white cedars differ is eco-friendliness. Red cedar shakes demonstrate greater energy efficiency than white. Because white cedar shakes tend to be less durable, they can deteriorate faster and require repairs more often than red.
Cost: Red cedar shakes tend to be a little more costly than white cedar shakes.
Whether you prefer red cedar or white cedar, you can be Eco-friendly while receiving all the benefits of cedar. Both materials add character and sturdiness that will last for years and look beautiful on your home.
Option 2: LP Smart Siding and Exterior Trim: If you are looking for a wood look but a different material, LP Smart Siding is a great option. It is a type of engineered wood siding that’s made from wood strands and fibers that are bonded together with resins, waxes, and zinc borate. With these added layers of protection, it provides strength, helps protect against freezing and thawing cycles, excessive humidity (which is typical of Hatteras Island!) and helps resist decay and termites.
LP Smart Siding and Trim also come in a variety of colors. It also is available primed so you can pick a paint color of your choice, or it comes painted at the factory.
Although, there are several other exterior siding options, Cedar Shakes and LP Smart Siding are two that we recommend for Hatteras Island. We have found they are the most durable and provide a beautiful look for the exterior of your house.
